Global bitcoin uses more energy than a small country


It takes the energy output of Ireland to maintain the world's current use of bitcoin.  That's going to double by the end of this year, about the same energy output as the Netherlands.  At that rate, if my math is right, it will take the combined total energy production of China and the United States to keep it going ten years down the road. Imagine that.

I hope governments will take the necessary actions to prevent any future damage this would make to our environment.

I don't think bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies will stay forever decentralized because some central banks in different countries are already regulating its use. We should not neglect the negative effects of this technology just because it provides some benefits. We might regret it later.
