People with addiction should be helped, not blamed

My brother had a crippling drug addiction and he died when he was 24. To this day, a lot of our relatives talk about him as if he was a drug addict because it was easy or convenient. I saw how he struggled with it though and how crippling it was for him to rely on drugs every day.

I consider addiction as a form of mental disease. We should help people with these struggles because I'm sure it's hard to deal with.

I lived with him for a while before he died and I saw how hard he tried to fight it but just couldn't. It also didn't help that he didn't have the support nor the understanding of our parents.

I'm so sorry impicklerick. I can't even imagine how hard it must have been for you to be there and not being able to do anything to help him :(

An addict person is just faced with cravings that are far harder to resist. If we take that to heart, maybe we will start giving the addicted what they need to get their lives back under control. Nowadays there are so many good rehab centers, my father attended nyc rehab facilities http://addictionresource.com/drug-rehab/new-york/ . My mom didn't blame him, she supported him daily with his effort. As a resultm he quitted alcohol and  had a good and very successful life and career until died at 93
