Irina Polejaeva and her team use the latest techniques to bioengineer animals. With CRISPR genome editing, they make sheep with conditions that mimic human genetic diseases, and goats carrying transplanted pieces of chromosomes that enable the animals to produce human antibodies. But to bring her designs to life once she has applied these cutting-edge methods, Polejaeva, a developmental biologist at Utah State University in Logan, turns to a method that has been around for more than a quarter of a century: animal cloning carried out with essentially the same procedure used to produce Dolly the sheep in 1996.

Iowans — including minors — can legally buy high-potency marijuana drinks and gummies because of loopholes in state and federal laws, according to leaders in the state's new Bureau of Cannabis Regulation. While 5 to 10 milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can be intoxicating, some drinkable products have 1,000 milligrams or more per can, according to bureau staff.

A national group of state cannabis regulators — including Minnesota's director of medical marijuana — wants the federal government to crack down on the proliferation of hemp-derived THC and CBD and "set a minimum standard" for the safety of the products. "It will be essential to set regulations for hemp-derived cannabinoid products," reads a letter to Congress that the Cannabis Regulators Association sent earlier this month, "and to ensure that no additional loopholes are exploited." The letter was signed by Chris Tholkes, director of the Office of Medical Cannabis at the Minnesota Department of Health and treasurer of the regulator group, known as CANNRA.
