These Australian researchers think spider webs could be our secret weapon to understanding nature. While spider webs could not trap an elephant, their ability to trap minuscule fragments of DNA could change how scientists learn about wildlife, according to new Australian research. The Curtin University study on environmental DNA (eDNA) analysed 49 spider webs from the Perth Hills region and Perth Zoo, and identified the genetic signatures of 93 different animals.

The eight largest U.and Europe-based oil and gas producing companies are failing to align their plans with the Paris agreement goal of limiting global heating to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels and avoiding ever more catastrophic climate impacts. Oil Change International's Big Oil Reality Check report, released Tuesday, concludes that the plans of BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies would actually put the world on track for more than 2.4°C of warming and burn through nearly one-third of the global carbon budget for hitting the 1.5°C target.

We all know that we live in a changing world, changes most evident in the vast area of Asia and the Pacific. Over the past 20 years, the economies of many nations in the region have moved out of the category of "least developed" and graduated into "middle income" status. However, the positive changes that help make our lives better, healthier, and more prosperous, are not happening at the same time across all countries, or even equitably within them.

ST. LOUIS — Flooding is driving millions of people to move out of their homes, limiting growth in some prospering communities and accelerating the decline of others, according to a new study that details how climate change and flooding are transforming where Americans live. In the first two decades of the 21st century, the threat of flooding convinced more than 7 million people to avoid risky areas or abandon places that were risky, according to a paper Monday in the journal Nature Communications and research by the risk analysis organization First Street Foundation.

Usually, when something starts to rot, it gets pitched in the trash. But Joanne Rodriguez wants to turn the concept of rot on its head by growing fungus on trash to turn it into something better. "We train mushrooms to eat trash and create renewable, bio-based raw materials," she told TechCrunch. Rodriguez is the founder and CEO of Mycocycle, one of a fresh crop of startups using fungi, nature's recyclers, to create plastic-like polymers for a post-fossil fuel economy.

The floods that sent rivers of mud tearing through towns in Italy's northeast are another drenching dose of climate change's all-or-nothing weather extremes, something that has been happening around the globe, scientists say. The coastal region of Emilia-Romagna was twice struck, first by heavy rain two weeks ago on drought-parched ground that could not absorb it, overflowing riverbanks overnight, followed by this week's deluge that killed 13 and caused billions in damages.
