SINGAPORE — Nearly half of China's major cities are suffering "moderate to severe" levels of subsidence, putting millions of people at risk of flooding especially as sea levels rise, according to a study of nationwide satellite data released on Friday. The authors of the paper, published by the journal Science, found that 45% of China's urban land was sinking faster than 3 millimeters per year, with 16% at more than 10 mm per year, driven not only by declining water tables but also the sheer weight of the built environment.

Rising sea levels are causing coastal groundwater to ascend, making it saltier and more corrosive. This phenomenon is placing global underground infrastructure at risk, according to a new study from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The study reveals that critical systems such as sewer lines, roadways, and building foundations are increasingly vulnerable to corrosion and structural failures.

If environmentalists were truly concerned about saving the planet from carbon dioxide (CO2) and other "greenhouse gases," they would immediately bring back plastic bags, which are now banned in many left-wing cities for being too "polluting." New research published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology reveals that in 15 out of 16 applications of plastic covering 90 percent of global volume, non-plastic alternatives actually produced more greenhouses gases than plastic otherwise would.

Nearly half of China's major cities are sinking due to groundwater extraction and the sheer weight of urban buildings and infrastructure, a new study finds. The affected cities, which include Beijing and Tianjin, are concentrated in the eastern part of the country and along the coast. Combined with sea level rise, falling cities could expose around 10% of China's coastal population — between 55 and 128 million people — to flooding and irreparable damage by 2120.
